2025 CALIFORNIA

the elephant in the room

The varietal composition for The Elephant in the Room is 50% Syrah, and 50% Grenache, from the 2025 vintage. The vineyard source sits very close to the Napa/Sonoma County line, at about 1000’ feet elevation, with red iron rich soils from the Sonoma Volcanics series. Low yielding, high intensity fruit is the name of the game for this vineyard, which comes across in spades in this release.

A California twist on a Chateauneuf du Pape, the juicy berry aromas of the Grenache are underpinned by the peppery Syrah. On entry, the wine is broad and generous, fanning out to hit all parts of the palate. Medium weight, with lots of volume and pleasure, the berry and pepper aromas flavorfully persist in the mouth, with vanilla and toasted brioche adding texture. The wine finishes long and juicy, inviting another taste imminently. In sum, the Elephant in the Room is a gentle giant that will drink well for several years.

about the label

An elephant, it turns out, has never once been subtle. It isn't a mouse in the wall or a rumor in the group chat. It is enormous, it is standing in the middle of the room, and the only real trick — is deciding, out loud, that you're going to talk about it.

exploring this drops theme

Inside this drop’s zine, you’ll find a history of the elephant in the room that starts with a Russian fabulist in 1814 and ends, somehow, with Jimmy Durante looking a cop in the eye and asking, “What elephant?” The white elephant, recast from cursed gift to the price of a kingdom, and a $210 million airport. The pink elephant you’re thinking about right now. One dinner guest’s heroic, entirely unnecessary restraint. And the unwritten laws of the living room, from the “good towels” to the thermostat that belongs to exactly one person.

Included in this issue, our art object is a silver elephant pin, aptly named B.Y.O.E. (Bring Your Own Elephant). It’s small enough for a lapel and impossible to overlook once someone’s noticed it. It’s an elephant you can actually bring to dinner, which is either a dare or an icebreaker, depending on how much you’d rather keep talking about quartz countertops. Pin it on, pour a glass, and see who asks first. Like any good elephant, it isn’t subtle. It’s just waiting for someone to say it out loud.
