Malbec is one of the 5 great Bordeaux varieties, along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. In Bordeaux, it has become a minor blending grape of late. Elsewhere in France, it is frequently referred to as Cot, and is the principal grape of the Cahors region, in Southwest France, where it makes a dark, tannic, long lived wine. Long ago, Malbec was exported to Argentina where it became the principal wine made, and makes a much more approachable, fruit driven wine.
